Now we’ve beat the winter blues, it’s time to start shaking off our excess weight and get into the warmer weather.
And by excess weight, we mean all that clutter accumulated in the house throughout the year; it’s time for a spring clean!
To help us unclutter our lives and homes, we called on the expert advice of Sarah Shanahan who you might remember from the time she upstyled a Plush Sofa or when she showed us into her home and style secrets.
Sarah recently spent some time with us sharing her tips on how to make space in your home and head to get ready for the forthcoming silly season.
Here’s what we learned:
While you or the kids might have outgrown clothes, toys and trinkets in your home, there are many families in the community who are very much in need, and would be appreciative of your donation.
Get into cupboards and drawers and mark a box for donations. Find out where your nearest charity drop off point is and donate clothes, toys and household items in good condition. You’ll make more space, get good karma and make a difference in someone’s life.
If you have spare cupboards or guest rooms, use those rooms to vacuum pack your winter clothes and blankets and store them under beds of spare wardrobes. Remove the clutter from the rooms you regularly use and utilise the spare spaces. Then you can hold on to the things you need later without taking up valuable space in your living areas.
If you don’t need it, get rid of it! We tend to accumulate ‘stuff’ for the sake of it. Fill up bin bags with the things you don’t need, won’t use and are never going to miss! Anything that isn’t worthy of a charity donation can be tossed out. Don’t forget to recycle!
If you have things in your house that are too valuable to throw away but can’t be easily donated, why not thing about selling it? Sarah often sells her unwanted belongings on Gumtree, but you can also sell on eBay, trash and treasure markets or ‘Buy, Swap, Sell’ pages on Facebook.
Once you’ve sorted the donations from the dollar makers and the trash from the treasure, you can start to admire all the bits and pieces you are keeping. While it’s great to be ruthless in your de-cluttering, it’s good to keep your memories, must-haves and anything you might miss.
Once Sarah has successfully cleared the clutter in her home, she can kick back on her Plush sofa and enjoy the space created by a darn good spring clean!
