How long should you wait to seek assistance if things aren’t going to plan?

If you’re actively trying to start a family and you are under the age of 35, 12 months is about the right amount of time. If you’re over the age of 35, you should seek assistance after six months of trying for a baby. Ask your GP first and then go to a fertility specialist to ask whether you should be seeking treatment.

Who should I go to see if I’ve decided to consult with a specialist?

If you are considering, or it has been recommended you seek fertility treatment, there are a few clinics in South Australia you can turn to.

How much will it cost?

Most clinics charge about the same amount, but you there are a few things you should consider when choosing which clinic to go with so you can get your money’s worth.

Is the doctor a specialist?

Fertility treatment, like any kind of medicine is a specialised area, so ensure your treating doctor is a specialist in fertility medicine.

Does the clinic have the latest in medical technology?

Make sure the clinic uses up to date technology. Fertility treatment is a specialised science with real results that can be tracked.

Is the location private and do they have a range of facilities on site?

It may seem really simple, but location is important. Make sure the clinic you choose is easy to access. Find out if they offer a range of services in the one location. Ask if the clinic has an onsite day surgery and lab. Ask if they offer a full range of proven fertility treatment and even consider if they have a pharmacist on site who is fully trained in fertility medication and can dispense on the same day as your appointment. Facilities to take blood and conduct ultrasounds onsite are also important.

What is the clinic’s success rate?

This is the most important question. How successful is the specialist fertility clinic at helping you to fall pregnant? You should be able to ask your clinic about their success rates and they should be transparent in their response.

Are you feeling supported throughout the process?

This is crucial. There are costs involved when going through fertility treatment. Those costs are financial, emotional and time. Your specialist should realise what an important time this is for you and support you accordingly.
