Our eldest son Ed lives with chronic illness but we didn’t want that to stop him playing his favourite sports footy and cricket. What we do want is for him to be as safe as possible and simply filling in the medical form just didn’t seem to offer enough protection. This season we were forced to look for a better solution, because as the parents of three boys, we are now often spread across various metropolitan sporting grounds – sometimes meaning a primary caregiver is not at Ed’s games.

Our search led us to MedicAlert, Australia’s most trusted supplier of medical identification jewellery. We ordered Ed the Stainless Steel Black Sports Band and feel so much more confident when he takes to the field each week knowing the band can speak for him in the event of an emergency when he might not be able to speak for himself.

After selecting the band we registered all Ed’s medical history and details with a member of the MedicAlert membership team. All the particulars are stored with MedicAlert and in the event of an emergency a health-worker can phone the MedicAlert 24/7 emergency hotline and speak to the nursing service, who has full access to Ed’s vital information. Each member is assigned a unique membership number which is engraved on the back of their emblem – this assists with quick identification in an emergency.

MedicAlert membership is just $32 per year (62c per week), plus the cost of the band (priced from $42). It has already given us enormous peace of mind and we know from this point forward we will renew each year, taking the opportunity to update Ed’s medical details on his electronic health record if required.

A membership is not only perfect for someone like Ed who lives with heart disease and asthma, but also valuable for anyone with other medical conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, allergies and dementia. If you have other important information you’d like communicated in the event of an emergency including an Advanced Care Directive or medical requirements, a MedicAlert can do this for you.

These days a MedicAlert doesn’t just come in a stainless steel bracelet, but loads of fashion styles in a rainbow of colours for men and women of all ages – including options that are designed with gemstones and Swarovski elements. The medical ID could easily be mistaken for a fashion accessory, but the iconic emblem quickly triggers health professional and caregivers to seek information that could save the wearers life.
