ENJOY ADELAIDE’S FINEST PUBS THIS SUMMER.
Forgot to book a venue for the work Christmas do? We’ve done the leg work for you (and the taste test) and found the best summer pub fare around Adelaide. Elasticated waistbands are mandatory and yes, you can eat dessert with lunch.
We started in Adelaide’s iconic eastern suburbs with ever popular The Colonist. Its historic charm and rich history indulge patrons with a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Soaring ceilings with ornate copper details and touches of yesteryear charm pay homage to it’s mid-nineteenth century origins. The menu highlights? Brisket Sandwich for the carnivores and a delightfully ample selection for the veggie lovers including the Herbivore Bowl, Vege Bowl and the delectable Foraging Plate with zucchini and corn fritters, baked gnocchi, and sweet potato wedges. Yum!
THE MILE END.
Heading west of the city, we sampled the offerings of the definitive ‘Gastropub’, The Mile End. Not your average pub fare here with a refined menu and extensive boutique beverage list. It’s art deco interior with five dining spaces and freshly renovated accommodation options which makes this city fringe venue a happy alternative to the CBD. Our pick of the bunch? Thit Kho Pork and Egg, and fresh Mexican Bowl. However, we started our meal with the St. Louis butter cake with salted caramel ice cream! Don’t judge.
A trip to Adelaide’s southern vales and impressive McLaren Vale wine region is not complete without fuelling up at Mick O’Sheas. This multi-purpose venue is a favourite among locals and its summer offerings of epic cocktails and classic pub fare with local produce, and gorgeous garden views give this hotel a bucket list rating. Enjoy a refreshing Sangria with a Seared Kangaroo Salad amongst the sprawling lawns and clear blue skies iconic to the region.
THE DUCK INN.
The Duck Inn is everything you would expect and more of a picturesque Adelaide Hills location. Nestled in stunning Coromandel Valley, its proximity to metropolitan Adelaide makes it a destination venue. The expansive menu offers small plates for the indecisive who can’t choose just one dish (guilty!). We delighted our taste buds with Twice Cooked Pork Belly, Crispy Schezuan Baby Squid and Pulled Confit Duck Leg with Steamed Buns. Tapas style eating is never complete without a refreshingly fruity beverage – the Blood Orange Martini and Strawberry and Rhubarb Gin and Tonic were as delicious as they sound.
Just south of the city, the beautifully modernised The Unley offers the ultra-hip rooftop bar for the warmer weather. All-day weekend dining, the best locally sourced produce, and a thoughtfully selected South Australian dominant beverage list inspire a faithful crowd at this contemporary venue. If you could capture summer in a glass it would be the Blackberry Gin Fizz. Food highlights from the menu include the Pan Fried Gnocchi with Prosciutto and Ricotta, Chashu Pork Salad and the Vegetarian Pizza.
